Depression accompanied by heavy snowfall has hit Japan this weekend, leaving at least 11 dead and 1250 injured throughout the country, according to a provisional report on the television channel NHK.
It is the largest winter storm to hit Japan in 45 years. Tokyo, for example, received 27 inches of snow, according to the National Agency of Meteorology.
No less than 5300 different incidents were reported across the country because of the snow. At least 1,253 people were injured in falls or collisions.
The storm also caused power outages. Thus, more than 20,000 homes were without power.
Travelers who had to leave the capital also had to take their troubles patiently more than 1,100 flights were canceled Saturday and Sunday.
The storm, which has now left Tokyo, is now heading towards the north of Japan, where more snow is feared.
The clearing operations were initiated quickly in the capital, Tokyo voters are called to the polls on Sunday to elect a new governor.
