A photo circulating on the Internet shows three men near the carcass of a lion. The image has not been verified by independent sources, but evidence indicates that the lion was shot in the zoo Al Qarya al-Shama Ghouta, a suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus, to be eaten.
Activists point out that this kind of image is proof that citizens besieged Syrian hungry and fall back on zoo animals to survive. This photo published on the web could also be a message to the regime of Bashar al Assad against the rebels who are leading the fight. The Arabic word for lion is "Assad". Last month, a group of Syrian clerics issued a fatwa allowing people in the besieged neighborhoods eat meat normally prohibited under Islamic law.
To reduce famine in the region Ghouta, the Muslim clergy gave the permission to eat cats, dogs and donkeys. They even warned the world that the Syrians hungry could be reduced to cannibalism if the situation continues to deteriorate. District Ghouta is besieged by the Syrian army for several months.
